The King’s School Devon DT Block Transformation

The King’s School Devon is an outstanding comprehensive school for students aged between 11-18 years old. The school has a proud history dating back to the 14^th century and is driven by the philosophy of ‘Achievement for All’. King’s School aim to ensure they unlock every child’s potential so that they can achieve the highest possible academic and personal outcomes.

The Brief

In February 2020 Innova was approached by The King’s School to modernise their DT block due to an increase in popularity of the subject. The aim was to create multi-purpose Design and Technology interiors to inspire students’ creativity. This included delivering four diverse DT and Textile spaces as well as upgrading their Store, ICT room and toilet facility.

The School’s brief was to ensure the layouts were spacious and engaging for the students to learn in so that the teaching staff can continue to deliver their top tier education.

Kings School had a tight deadline for the project and with the added difficulty of it starting in April 2020, during national lockdown, presented Innova with a few additional challenges to manage. Our skilled professionals worked closely with the school to complete the project in just seven weeks, hitting budget and deadline!

The Solution

Innova’s full turnkey solution included everything from design and manufacture to installation of furniture, M&E Works and Flooring.

The layouts of all the interiors create spacious environments with adequate circulatory space to meet health and safety standards.

New ultra-modern inspirational DT spaces now house moveable craft island benches with solid wood worktops for flexibility and durability. All workbenches face the teacher’s desk and with whiteboards located at the front of the classroom provide a key focal point. The new layout makes it easier for the teaching staff to engage with all students.  Machinery and services including band saws, pillar drills sinks are kept to the perimeter of the room to maximise space and maintain safety.

The Textile rooms has a very similar layout to the DT rooms where the central area accommodates movable island benches but with Trespa worktops for durability and ease of maintenance.  Sawtooth benching around the perimeter, provides easy access to essential equipment, whilst the addition of LED lights underneath the run of overhead cabinet storage provides a stylish look and feel.

A separate store room helps to keep the environment clutter free and safe.

To ensure Kings School students have all the latest facilities they need to succeed, the ICT rooms have also been modernised with new benching and an electrical upgrade whilst the refurbishment of toilets in the DT block, completes this advanced facility renovation.

The new transformed DT department will inspire students creatively and continue to improve the prospects of pupils at the King’s School for many years to come, enabling ‘Achievement for all’.
