Large-Scale Laboratory & Prep Room Refurbishment during lockdown!
As a Specialist Business and Enterprise School, Snaith School continues to provide a broad and balanced curriculum. The school’s aim is to enrich and extend learning by encouraging economic and business understanding. Students are inspired to develop a range of key skills including creativity and innovation, risk management, problem solving as well as decision-making.
The Science department benefits from specialist teaching in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. As part of their on-going development, Snaith School’s plan was to modernise their facilities to meet the needs of 21st century learning.

The Brief
Early February 2020, Innova Design Group tendered for the full turnkey refurbishment of six laboratories and four prep rooms at Snaith School including Ceiling, Lighting, Flooring, M&E Works and Decoration.
Innova’s brief was to transform the out-dated laboratories and prep rooms into safe, fully functioning contemporary flexible spaces, with plenty of storage to house resources.
From site survey to design, quote and preparation of the final tender documents, within 6 weeks Innova was appointed to carry out the complete refurbishment just as national lockdown hit the UK.
The Solution
Working closely with Education Alliance to an agreed phased schedule, Innova designed, manufactured and installed the complete renovation in 7 weeks including the additional challenges of working during lockdown.
Innova’s successful delivery of the project was attributed to a number of key factors including:
- Working in partnership.
- Communicating effectively, bi-weekly meeting to monitor the progress of the project to plan and budget.
- Providing the flexibility to adapt to change and managing any risks accordingly.
The additional lockdown challenges were addressed by modifying our key processes from facilitating video conferencing sessions, social distancing, carrying out additional risk assessments, daily health & safety checks, plenty of on-site notices to arranging sanitising facilities. We ensured government guidelines were followed closely to keep the project team SAFE and WELL.

The new Science department is now a flexible environment, accommodating different teaching styles from group work to practical and theory sessions and it’s great to hear both student and staff are loving their new spaces!
Each laboratory has been installed with a Flexi-POD layout. This type of lab design allows the teaching staff to easily reconfigure the layout in number of ways, as the POD, containing all the services is static and the free standing tables can be positioned around the POD.
- Pod units provide students with the necessary services for practical work, without taking up valuable desk space
- Students have a good view of the teacher depending on the layout
- Promotes collaboration, easier to configure workspace to accommodate both practical and theory work
The teacher demo area provides a focal point for teachers to demonstrate experiments and with plenty of drawer, cupboard and Gratnell tray storage means the classrooms can be kept clutter free.
By adapting to change during lockdown, our ability to plan effectively and long term investment in our In-house design and manufacturing facilities allows Innova to provide genuine value for money.
