Established in 1919, Evans Vanodine International PLC based in Preston, Lancashire is a world leader in the chemical research, development and manufacture of cleaning and hygiene products for the industrial, janitorial, food process and animal health sectors, exporting to over 80 countries globally.

The company has built a reputation in research and development, with a flow of new and improved formulations constantly being added to their portfolio of products.

Evans Vanodines’ facilities have transformed in a 100 years from a small laboratory and an office in 1919 to a 5 acre site with state-of-the-art 100,000sq ft advanced manufacturing plant, warehousing and modern laboratories including R&D, QC and Microbiology, equipped with highly advanced analytical instrumentation.

“The environment Innova has created for us has made a remarkable difference: Increased circulation space, improved workflow efficiency and ample room to accommodate extra specialist equipment. Our technicians have more space to focus and deliver consistently accurate results efficiently”

Miriam Finlay, Technical Manager (Microbiology)

The Brief

In 2017 Evans Vanodine planned to expand their H.Q. facilities and appointed Sunderland Peacock Architects to develop their eye catching designs for the extension.

Later that year Williams Tarr Construction commenced work on the new £1.9m building contract of the existing H.Q. offices and extension for additional offices, Micro-biology labs, together with adaptations to the external works.

Early 2018 as part of the new build development, Innova was approached by Evans Vanodine to create interior designs for their new laboratories and offices

Consulting closely with the Microbiologists and Scientists to understand their requirements, the laboratory designs were progressed allowing sufficient space for all activities, minimising contamination and cross contamination, optimising circulation and work flows, accommodating new equipment with adequate space for additional employees in the future.

Innova was subsequently appointed to deliver the furniture installation of the Microbiology, R&D and QC Laboratories plus offices based on the final designs.

The Solution

The Microbiology lab now features a compact clean room space with lockers and a sink area, on entry to the main laboratory.  A number of distinct testing areas have been created in the central lab featuring steel framed island workstations, with mobile storage units to house materials and equipment coupled with DDA desks at the end of the benching for paperwork.

Plenty of storage has been accommodated around the perimeter including double, single cupboards and drawer units plus sufficient space to house specialist equipment including incubators, fridges, glass washer and more.

The Laboratory houses a prep sterilisation zone equipped with a contamination table, modern autoclaves and bench mounted ovens to assist with microbial control. Whilst a dedicated desk/office space, enables the staff to record results and produce computerised test reports.

The R&D and QC labs are now located closer to the production area, as discrete operations with separate wet & dry lab facilities, allowing space for growth.

The new cutting-edge Laboratories will serve Evans Vanodine well into the 21st century as the company continues to research and develop new products for clients across the globe.
