Newlands Girls’ School installs Innova’s ‘Hot Corner’ Laboratory
Teresa May, MP for Maidenhead recently unveiled a brand new state-of-the-art Laboratory at Newlands Girls’ School that has been designed, manufactured and installed by interior specialists, Innova Design Group.
Newlands already boasts an excellent reputation for first class education, where students can flourish academically and socially. The school’s ethos is to empower students to realise their potential and encourage a love of learning.
The Brief
In 2018, as part of their on-going development, the school planned to upgrade their dated Science lab as it was in need of modernisation.
After a year from the initial contact with a local education charity, Spoore, Merry and Rixman regarding the possibility of funding the refurbishment, Newlands secured the monies to proceed with the project.
In March 2018 the Head of Science approached Innova to design and quote for the full turnkey refurbishment of their Science Laboratory including ceiling, lighting, flooring, plumbing, electrics, decoration as well as the manufacture and install of furniture.
Following a competitive tender process based on design, price and turnkey services Innova, was appointed to deliver the new cutting-edge laboratory.
"Since the redesign, engagement levels have increased as the layout encourages all pupils to interact and participate in the lessons.
The Teacher Demonstration Unit allows all students a clear view of teacher led experiments.
Now, with the newly installed desks, the flow of the room is much better as both students and teacher can move around freely during practical lessons."
The Solution
The old laboratory has been completely overhauled and now features Innova’s unique ‘Hot’ Corner layout, which supports a flexible environment for both theory and practical work. Every pupil faces the front of the room, the teacher can circulate freely, and a more collaborative approach to learning has been created.
The previous layout was reconfigured with the teacher now positioned along the long wall, which shortens the lines of communication and improves classroom management. Services are located on the front face of the units so that working space is optimised and gas and electrics are still easily accessible.
With ample storage around the perimeter students are able to switch quickly between both practical and theory lessons.
Installation of a space saving teacher wall, which houses both a projector screen and dry wipe white boards, with multiple storage options, helps to de-clutter the front of the class and maximise concentration.
The new state-of-the-art labs will ensure the quality of teaching is enhanced and that students’ continue to realise their full potential.
