Their previous setup no longer supported the growing requirements of modern testing, quality assurance, and technical research. To maintain manufacturing excellence and provide their teams with a professional, efficient, and safe working environment, the company planned to redevelop a section of the factory into a purpose-built commercial laboratory.

Project brief

In early 2025, Perrin & Rowe approached Innova with the ambition of transforming part of their existing Wolverhampton factory into a bespoke, purpose-built commercial laboratory. Designed to support product research, quality control, and materials testing, the new space was required to deliver exceptional durability while retaining the flexibility to evolve with future operational demands.

The brief specified that the laboratory design should enhance visibility, streamline workflow, and maximise natural light. With limited space available, the layout needed careful planning to include smart storage solutions, provide for specialist equipment alongside a balance bench, and sustain a practical, uncluttered, and highly efficient working environment.

A comprehensive turnkey solution was required, including the removal of existing fixtures, the construction of new stud walls, installation of glazing, air conditioning, air handling and fire doors to define the laboratory space, along with new ceilings, insulation, LED lighting, flooring, electrical and mechanical systems, and complete decoration.

Robust safety measures were essential to protect staff and minimise disruption to ongoing manufacturing operations including a complete hoarding with roof to ensure production was maintained.

Perrin & Rowe’s team are delighted with the completed bespoke laboratory, which meets their current technical needs while offering the flexibility to evolve, strengthening innovation and supporting the company’s high standards of crafmanship well into the future.

The solution

To deliver a fully functional laboratory within an active factory environment, Innova first installed OSB hoarding to create a secure, self-contained workspace that ensured safety and prevented disruption to surrounding operations. From there, the team delivered a complete turnkey refurbishment, including new electrics, plumbing, flooring, ceilings, partition walls, and windows, transforming an empty section of the factory into a high-performance laboratory.

The design placed flexibility at the centre. A perimeter benching layout was introduced to maximise space efficiency while creating clear workflow routes. Storage was integrated throughout the room: half was built into the fixed perimeter benching, while the remaining units were installed on castors, under C-frame benching, allowing equipment and supplies to be reconfigured easily as the laboratory’s requirements evolved. Additional wall-mounted storage above the workbenches further increased capacity without encroaching on floor space.

Durability and safety were central to the design, with a robust Polysafe low-slip floor chosen to withstand heavy use and services thoughtfully arranged, including both bench-level and under-bench sockets to support a wide range of equipment demands.  Worktops were manufactured in Trespa TopLab® Base for chemical resistance and longevity, supported by 18mm MF-MDF cabinetry for strength and stability. 240° safety hinges and soft-close door fittings were used within the cabinets. Surface-mounted trunking was added to the worktop edges to help contain spills and maintain a clean working environment.

The design incorporated a dedicated glass-fronted cabinet for computers and the XRF machine, providing visibility and protection. A separate chemical storage zone was created, housing the fume cupboard, COSHH cabinets, and associated safety equipment to ensure compliance and streamline laboratory workflows.
The result is a durable, flexible, and fully future-proof laboratory space built to support Perrin & Rowe’s ongoing research, development, and quality assurance activities.

Outcome:

The completed laboratory has become a valuable new asset within Perrin & Rowe’s Wolverhampton facility, providing a professional, well-organised, and highly functional environment for research, quality control, and product testing. The space now offers the durability, flexibility, and storage capacity the team required, while supporting a more efficient workflow and safer day-to-day operations.
Delivered as a full turnkey project, the transformation was carried out with minimal disruption to factory activity, thanks to careful planning and the controlled, hoarded-off workspace.

Perrin & Rowe’s team are extremely pleased with the final result – a purpose-built laboratory that not only meets their immediate technical needs but also offers the adaptability they were looking for as their processes continue to evolve.
The new facility strengthens the company’s ability to innovate and maintain the exceptional standards their products are known for, creating a future-ready space that will support ongoing development for years to come.
